FAREWELL FRANKEL

Sir Henry Cecil paid a fitting tribute to Frankel after the wonder horse returned to his birthplace Banstead Manor Stud yesterday. He will begin his new career as a stallion for Juddmonte Farms next year. The unbeaten star retires to stud as the winner of fourteen races. Trainer Sir Henry Cecil echoed just how good he was and that it’ll be hard to find one greater. He said: “He had the speed to be a champion sprinter and then, once he grew up and settled, he got a distance with a turn of foot that makes champions”. Frankel received a very warm welcome from the Juddmonte team, where they expect an annual roster of 100 mares charging £100,000 each time! It has been an emotional month for racing fanatics with the sad retirement of chasing legend Kauto Star, for Paul Nicholls.

LAYALI DUBAI HELPS LAND 12/1 DOUBLE ON MEMORABLE EVENING AT WOLVERHAMPTON

It was a phenomenal evening for GYTO at Wolverhampton yesterday as we hit six winners out of a possible eight on the all weather. Most noticeably a 12/1 double in Noverre To Go and Layali Dubai to cap off a profitable day. Noverre To Go stayed on under pressure to fend off a strong late challenge from Jacob Butterfield on board Last Sovereign, winning by three-quarters of a length. With the first leg of the evening double in it was down to the Godolphin-trained Layali Dubai (photo – centre). There were concerns prior to the race about a limited amount of pace up front but Rythmic made it a test from the off suiting the three-year-old favourite down to a tee. Silvestre De Sousa gave the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained filly out of Darley, a perfectly weighted-with ride before tanking down the home-straight to reel in long-time leader Rythmic. We went on to land the ‘lucky last’ as Four Leaves proved too good for Sir Henry Cecil’s Srinagar Girl. It was an evening to remember, but much needed in truth, with a slow start to the day. Chrissycross did throw up a welcomed-surprise at Lingfield, winning at 25/1 for Roger Teal under Adam Kirby. It was a convincing performance from the three-year-old, striding out a cosy three-length winner. (Photo – http://www.godolphin.com/PhotoGalleryMain.aspx?gid=1245)

LONG RUN BIDDING TO REGAIN KING GEORGE

Long Run is among thirty-one entries for the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. Trained by Nicky Henderson, Long Run is attempting to regain his title lost last year to the recently retired chasing legend Kauto Star. With the five-time winner out the way, the bookies make Long Run a 4/1 favourite. The 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner is also among the entries for the Betfair Chase at Haydock a little later on this month. All the vibes seem positive regarding his jumping, which was significantly improve last season. The seven-year-old is just one of many potential superstars for Henderson with RSA Chase winner Bobs Worth, Ryanair Chase winner Riverside Theatre and Champion Chase winner Finian’s Rainbow completing his squad. Arch rival, Paul Nicholls, enters five for the King George including most recent runaway Haldon Gold Cup victor Cue Card whom bookies make a 10/1 shot. Silviniaco Conti heads-up his hugely talented chasing pack. Second in the betting for the King George is the David Pipe-trained Grand Crus, who is a 5/1 shot with William Hill. He was an impressive winner of the Feltham Novice Chase at the meeting last year and has been quoted at 12/1 again with William Hill, to land both the Paddy Power Gold Cup and the King George.

LAY LANDED

Good morning punters!

It was a return to form for GYTO followers yesterday as we hit a profit at four of the five meetings around the country and over in Ireland. Gordon Elliott’s Cause Of Causes got the better of Si C’Etait Vrai, a warm favourite at Fairyhouse, to get the day off to the perfect start. The four-year-old has been cut across the board for the Racing Post Hurdle on the Sunday of the Cheltenham Open meeting for which he is now a best-priced 16/1, after running out a cosy half-length winner. Bet365 reacted the most, cutting him from 25/1 into 12′s. Trainer Gordon Elliott said: “He’ll get a 5lb penalty for this but I thin the fast pace that we’ll get over there will suit him and I’m looking forward to sending him over there.” Darlan heads the market at a best-priced 6/1.

MENORAH OUT TO PROVE HIS WORTH FOR HOBBS

Philip Hobbs sends Menorah on Champion Hurdle trail

There is a cracking six-race card at Exeter today as the jump season gets into full swing. The Phillip Hobbs-trained Menorah wasn’t at his best when tackling Cue Card at Cheltenham and finished a distant twenty-two length third, some twenty-nine lengths off the magnificent Sprinter Sacre in the Arkle. He did however, bounce back to his best at Aintree just a month later, taking the 2m4f Manifesto Novices’ Chase. A convincing seven-length victory over the Paul Nicholls-trained Cristal Bonus saw him end the season with a greater rating than Tizzard’s six-year-old. Cristal Bonus has of course franked that form since, routing the field by a nine-length victory at Down Royal. Phillip Hobb’s sounded fairly bullish about Menorah latest, but stressed it is his first run of the season. He is in good form and they are very happy with him. 2m2f is likely to suit over this stiff track and he has the ability to see off Cue Card despite a 3lb swing against.

Betting angle

Looks a fairly tough day at Southwell on the all weather. There are one or two nice types in action but on the whole it’s worth keeping it low stakes this afternoon, especially with some quality jumps action over at Exeter. La Estrella bids to make history at the track today, making it thirteen from thirteen at the track. The first race of the day is over a mile and it looks a wide open handicap. Chez Vrony was the tentative selection, albeit still a maiden, he ran well latest and looks a solid each way punt under David Probert. He has been subject to some support this morning 5′s from 11/2. Little Miss Zuri is really interesting in the next having run her best race to date, when a staying-on fourth in 6f nursery at Wolverhampton last week. That run came out of a handicap and couldn’t rule her out back on her proper mark. The Sylvester Kirk-trained two-year-old promises to stay but it is her fibresand debut and there is a slight question whether she’ll take to the surface. She is going walkies in the market, 6′s from 9/2 this morning and may well be best watched. Only Ten Per Cent goes well at Southwell, winning four times this year. He has conditions in his favour and is coming back down the weights, just 2lb higher than for last win. The four-year-old will be involved come the latter stages of the race and looks a worthy punt at 4/1 in another open handicap. North Pole is a worthy next best in a weak race at 2.40 for Sir Mark Prescott. He can break his maiden tag at the fourth time of asking despite probably running over an inadequate trip. The threat Lilac Lace will probably find the drop in trip and different surface all too much with Lexington Place too inconsistent to be backing. We have taken a chance in the 3.10 ignoring the market principals in Mason Hindmarsh and Benartic. Instead we are seeking value in Agglestone Rock. A 20/1 chance for Philip Kirby under Eva Moscrop. He has won over 2m on turf, most recently last season at Haydock and is entitled to have needed recent comeback run at Southwell. In a tricky race the seven-year-old looks a worthy each way punt, and looks overpriced at 20/1. There has been bits and pieces this morning, and he has been nibbled into 14′s. Gaelic Wizard is hard to get away from in the maiden having gone so close on all three starts since dropping to the minimum trip. He is lightly-raced and looks sure to win sooner rather than later. Generous Genella is the final bet of the day and she looked good when finishing a close third at Pontefract in June 2011. She’s entitled to her seasonal debut latest and is by no means handicapped out of things with the eyeshields now tried.

KHAZIUM CAN BREAK HIS MAIDEN IN EASIER COMPANY AT PLUMPTON

The Brendan Powell-trained Khazium has been highly tried finishing sixth most recently at Huntingdon, but he was hampered two-out that day when edging closer to mount a challenge and can make amends in this easier company today. He ran well at Plumpton back in September finishing a close second and can break his maiden today back at two-miles.

Plumpton

Class 5 Maiden Hurdle 12.50 RUM AND BUTTER 10/1 3 point win 4th -3pts

It’s a really tough maiden hurdle to get the action underway at Plumpton. Pendra has obvious claims for Charlie Longsdon who struck a double yesterday with Hildisvini and Brassick scoring at Huntingdon. Although, the stables form over hurdles is yet to be desired with a strike rate of just 1-20 at 5%. Rum And Butter is an interesting recruit for Jonjo O’Neill who operates with a 16% strike rate at the course. The four-year-old ran out a creditable fourth on hurdling debut over course and distance and would have needed that run. He is definitely one for the shortlist. Ubaldo Des Menhies is interesting for Oliver Sherwood, a man who is in superb form. The French horse is also proven on this softer going but I’ve got a feeling it won’t be easy today and being unproven over the distance tackling hurdles for the first time is enough for me to avoid, for now. Mister Newby should make any shortlist proven at the course and on the going but he looked laboured latest and only landed his bumper by a neck. It’s a weak race from all angles in truth and it’s extremely hard to get away from the Charlie Longsdon-trained Pendra with Noel Fehily riding at a course he loves but we have decided to oppose the short-favourite. Rum And Butter has raced keenly on all three starts, latest on hurdling debut. Where he hit the last fence, halting any momentum he may have had to gain on the leader. He is a type to do better for Jonjo O’Neill and looks like he has a lot more running in him. He has experience and race fitness over some and looks the best viable option at the forecasted prices.

Class 4 Novice Hurdle 1.20 AWESOME BELLA 5/2 4 point win 5th -4pts

An interesting race on paper and Floral Spinner catches the eye for Bill Turner having won two of her four bumpers but she is yet to tackle a hurdle and she may well need the experience, despite her pedigree suggesting she’ll do well over hurdles. She is opposed on this occasion. Awesome Bella is the one we cannot get away from having run so well at Towcester. She wouldn’t have to improve much on her second start over hurdles to take this. She closed on Definite Memories all the way to the line latest and looked a thorough stayer. Stable form is also a huge positive with Alan King firing on all cylinders of late. Ruby Glow made the shortlist having shaped well in bumpers with the extra yardage in her favour, but like Floral Spinner, may need this run.

Class 4 Handicap Hurdle 1.55 STRATHCAL 6/1 1 point EW 3rd +0.5pts

Sounding like a broken record at the moment but this is another tricky contest. A two-mile handicap with many of these out of form. Ministry is readily opposed having been well-beaten here latest and the winner of that race failing to follow up on Friday. It’s wide open and no doubt many of you will be siding with Where’s Johnny who should go well dropped in trip with a reappearance run behind him. He has also dropped 6lb down the handicap and has Mattie Batchelor up, he’ll no doubt be popular. Strathcal however, is the one we feel to give another chance to. Tom Symonds doesn’t run them over hurdles at Plumpton unless they’re ready to go and the six-year-old can overcome a lengthy absence. Butler is likely to be given another chance by many, but what we have seen of him simply doesn’t warrant a bet, but we’ll keep a close eye on Tim Vaughan’s charge.

Class 5 Handicap Chase 2.25 ZEPNOVE 25/1 1 point EW 5th -2pts

Zepnove has a lot to prove having been pulled up the last twice but his previous form and specifically reappearance run at Fontwell is worth taking note of. This is another weak affair that won’t take much winning. Beware Chalk Pit echoes inconsistency which could be a trend for the race with Absolute Shambles lining up. Zepnove switches the visor for cheekpieces and has run well on soft ground in the past. Dromore Hill ran well for a long way on debut for Claire Dyson but this step up in trip is unlikely to suit and he is still a maiden as an 8-yo. She’s Jolly at long, long odds may well have a squeak on the strength of it but be happy to let that spare £5 slip away should the race fall away from her.

Class 5 Claiming Hurdle 3.00 KHAZIUM 7/4 NAP 5 point win 3rd -5pts

A weak claiming hurdle and one that should well be within Khazium ‘s ability. Dropped to this grade after disappointing latest he looks primed for a big run for Brendan Powell. Richard Johnson up, the three-year-old should take some beating. Pass The Time made a winning hurdle debut ten days ago but that race may well have taken it out of him. The thought is he performed better than usual that day having been a modest horse on the flat. He’s one to take on at the projected prices.

Class 4 Handicap Chase 3.30 TRUCKERS BENEFIT 3/1 NB 4 point win 4th -4pts

We were behind Truckers Benefit a couple of weeks ago when he was somewhat a cosy winner over C&D and we can’t see any reason to oppose him here. Goring One is the obvious threat if back to his best but he still has a lot of questions to answer and again, may need the run. Truckers Benefit is an improving handicapper and can go one better in the hands of Richard Johnson today.

Class 5 Handicap Hurdle 4.05 KENALECK 7/1 2 point EW 6th -4pts

Kenaleck was runner-up in a selling handicap latest in first time-cheekpieces and deserved the win having jumped so well. He got tired on the flat though and was outbattled in the end. What it does prove is that he is off a workable mark and switches the cheekpieces for a tongue strap today to eek out some more improvement. He is up 5lb for that solid effort but should appreciate the ground and conditions. He looks a much better bet than Royale Knight at the odds, considering he was unplaced in all ten starts under rules. Probably does have more to give but you have to seek value against that price.

WISE DAN ROUTS RIVALS IN BREEDERS CUP MILE

We put a lot on the line last night at Santa Anita as we made our followers well aware that we were opposing Excelebration in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. It came to many disbelief, given the form he had in the book. With Frankel out the way, it looked a formality that he would shine on the big stage following his QEII demolition job. We have had our concerns regarding this horse for a while, and until now seemingly been proved wrong. We controversially made him a lay at Ascot and got our fingers well and truly burnt. A naive lay and a decision we obviously regret in hindsight given conditions were in his favour. We did however, have our reasons for the lay and were again happy to take him on, this time out of his comfort zone. He had a lot of questions to answer at Santa Anita and when he opened at 5/4 our decision was all but made up. The tight turning track would by no means prove in his favour. This combined with Joseph O’Brien not being one to rely on in a tactical affair, which we had no doubt it would turn into. Wise Dan was always going to have first run on Excelebration with the track a negative for Aidan O’Brien’s mount, it would prove a huge positive for Velazquez. There was a huge question mark regarding the ground as well. It was riding quicker than anything Excelebration had ridden on before and with his best form all coming on ground with juice in it, it would only add to a long list of negatives. Wise Dan had been prepped for the race and it was a brilliant training performance to land the Breeders’ Cup Mile. The American wonder-horse kicked off the home turn to devastating effect with Excelebration finishing a one-paced fourth having held every chance. Animal Kingdom, after a lengthy absence ran an absolute cracker in second with Obviously grabbing third at the death. Moonlight Cloud was never able to land a blow for trainer Freddy Head, five times a winner of the $2 million race. John Velazquez had been aboard Animal Kingdom when he triumphed beneath the twin spires at Churchill Downs last year, but the prospect of another opportunity to partner the revitalised Wise Dan proved too tempting to resist. It was great to see Animal Kingdom back to his best, with a touching trained-story behind him. He will surely remain in training with seemingly more to give. Trainer Charles Lopresti was an emotional wreck after the Mile, and how he was entitled to be. He said: “You could wait a lifetime for a horse like this”. To wait for Wise Dan at his prime racegoers had to hold on until this summers when Lopresti wtiched the Grade 1 dirt winner back to turf. It really was a fascinating Breeders’ Cup and one which we ended up in profit, making twenty points on both nights. Winners included 20/1 shot Calidoscopio and Royal Delta on day one, followed by Shanghai BobbyMizdirection and Wise Dan last night.

ROYAL DELTA WORTH EVERY DOLLAR

Last night was the start of the Breeders Cup over in America at the picturesque Santa Anita. It’s now a two-day event with some of the best horses from around the world doing battle on the dirt and turf. Last night saw GYTO notch up two winners, enough to end the evening well in profit. 20/1 Calidoscopio got us off to a great start in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon, a convincing four-and-a-half length victor. The Guillermo Frenkel Santillan-trained nine-year-old became the oldest horse to ever win at the Breeders Cup. The highlight of the night was still to come as the $8.5 million-filly Royal Delta proved her worth landing the Ladies Classic. She set a stern pace throughout and edged away inside the final furlong to beat Miss Aurelia by one-and-a-half lengths and the gambled on Include Me Out another one-and-a-quarter length third. It was a dramatic way for jockey Mike Smith to break his tie with the retired Jerry Bailey for the most career Breeders’ Cup victories, with Smith getting his 16th. Royal Delta became the second horse to win the Ladies’ Classic twice, following Bayakoa in 1989. Trainer Bill Mott looked absolutely delighted as she crossed the line, and so he should. He could become the first trainer to pull off the Ladies’ Classic and the Classic in two straight years sending out three talented horses in tonight’s $5 million Classic. Questing, winner of Saratoga’s Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama, struggled to match the early pace and was eventually pulled up on the backstretch. Thankfully, she showed no obvious physical problems. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said that the 3-year-old filly wasn’t responding and didn’t want to run. As a matter of protocol, the stewards said that a blood sample was taken to be tested. Godolphin tweeted this morning to say all was fine with the filly. There is an eight-race card to get stuck into tonight at Santa Anita and we’ll be posting our thoughts and tips a little later.

The Fugue was the best-backed horse of the night over at Santa Anita but endured a nightmare passage, eventually finishing seemingly full of running in third under William Buick. It sparked huge debate on twitter after Richard Hughes, suffered similar luck earlier on the card on Sky Lantern. The door was shut time and time again on The Fugue as Buick drove her up the inside. The tight track proving chaotic for European riders as the eventual winner smartly switched ride to endure a clear passage to victory. Richard Hughes will be disappointed having yet to break his Breeders Cup duck.

BREEDERS CUP PREVIEW

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (6.50)

A cracking race to open up a likely memorable night of Breeders’ Cup action. It’s a Grade 1 race run over a mile on the turf, and it’s likely to be run at some pace with the ground riding as firm as it comes. It’s run annually to showcase some of Europe’s finest juvenile talent and is open to two-year-old thoroughbreds who have qualified for the race via a series of feeder events. George Vancouver has been well backed throughout the day with the idea the quick ground will bring about significant improvement. Improvement that will be needed to take this competitive race. At 6/1, with so many questions still to be answered, he’s one to leave alone for now, despite Ryan Moore taking the ride. Mahmood Al Zarooni holds solid claims in Artigiano who has solid form in the book and is likely to give his running under the experienced Dettori. Roger Charlton’s two-year-old should top anyone’s shortlist. Dundonnell lost nothing in defeat to the classy Toronado in the Champagne Stakes and looks certain for further progression. Many will argue, at the prices, that George Vancouver’s form behind Dawn Approach is stronger but it is assuming a lot that he’ll progress enough to take this. We do have to point out that Aidan O’Brien does well in this race, having won twelve months ago with Wrote. We saw something in Dundonnell and his run at Doncaster that he has a big race in him and he can bring one home for the Europeans. James Doyle will have to be at his best, regarding his positioning, but if given the cover and getting the breaks 3/1 could look a big price. Not a lot is known about Joha who is a top performer in his own right. Trained by Michael Maker, he could prove the biggest danger to the European contingent.

Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (7.35)

It’s hard to look anywhere but Groupie Doll for this sprint, but that’s exactly what we’r going to do. Dust And Diamonds will have to improve to take this but she has potential in the locker and promises to get the trip. There is little value in backing the likely odds-on fav and a race in which favourites often perform below par, we are happy to oppose. Groupie Doll does possess the quickest figures and has been somewhat a revelation since fitting the blinkers, but she will face her stiffest test to date on the big stage that is the Breeders’ Cup. Dust And Diamonds is a tentative selection and we only advise small stakes in what looks a trappy race. There may well be a speed battle up front which could leave Switch with the race at her mercy. She has good experience and a good jockey and represents some value at the forecasted prices.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (8.14)

The Dirt Mile is an eagerly anticipated competitive race over a mile on dirt. The race is set for North American milers to do battle with the European counterparts usually aimed at the Breeders’ Cup Mile instead. Regarding racing trends, it’s tough, seeing as the race has only existed since 2007. However, in the past five years favourites haven’t paid well with not a single favourite visiting the winners enclosure. Emcee goes to post with great promise that the extra furlong will suit but he faces stiffer opposition in Jersey Town trained by Barclay Tagg, who had Shackleford behind him latest. He had gone off the boil prior to taking the Kelso Handicap, previously finishing five-lengths behind Emcee but sprung back to life latest and comes into this race full of confidence. Potentially the long-shot of the night, Delegation, could prove if taking to dirt. He has been in a rich vein of form of late but has yet to experience this type of ground. He could well be one for in-play punters.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (8.57)

An intriguing sprint, and one we are looking forward to out the first quartet of races. Unbridled’s Note looks a worthy favourite at the head of the market winning well over C&D latest. Tonight’s race is likely to be run to suit with Bridgetown likely to lead early on. He inflicted a length-and-a-quarter defeat on Chosen Miracle latest and is sure to improve on that run. Bridgetown is consistent and we couldn’t give you too many reasons to put you off but just have that feeling Unbridled’s Note could be too classy for these. We spent a fair amount of time studying Starspangledbanner, a horse we’r fond of, but his form of late is undesired and we can’t have him on side here. Ladbrokes also go top price about the Aidan O’Brien six-year-old which is the final nail in the coffin.

Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (9.36)

The Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is a race worth over $2 million dollars, run over eight-and-a-half furlongs on dirt with nine runners going to post. There are two stand-outs in the betting in Shanghai Bobby and the Bob Baffert-trained Power Broker, both whom have been impressive latest. Fortify, although behind Shanghai Bobby the last twice, looks to represent solid each way money in another race where the leading market principals usually struggle. There is reason for them to tonight, with the controversial Lasix being banned in all two-year-old races. The 14/1 Kiaran McLaughlin-trained colt shades the verdict on this factor and anticipated improvement.

Breeders’ Cup Turf (10.18)

We have been waiting a long time to get stuck into St Nicholas Abbey since landing the Coronation Cup and this looks like the perfect opportunity to do so. He was given too much to do in the King George and made up significant ground in the final furlong, enough so to keep him on side. To finish third and get within seven lengths of Frankel at his greatest, is nothing to be ashamed of. He then finished two-lengths off the pace in the Irish Champion Stakes where Snow Fairy at the top of her game cruised to victory. Again, a lot of positives can be taken from the race. Yes he disappointed in the Arc, but it was probably a step to far and if forgiven, he can run a huge race tonight. He reportedly came out of the race well and is no stranger to the Breeders Cup. He won this race last year, his optimum trip, and showed enough in the King George to entitle to him to the upmost respect this evening. Going left-handed around this tight-turning track can only further bolster his claims. Joseph will have to be at his best but his price looks big considering his form. This is, one of ‘the’ bets of the night!

Xpressbet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (10.58)

A very tricky race, potentially a trappy contest. Amazombie heads the market at 4/1 but is far from convincing having finished a one-paced fourth latest. Coil, on the otherhand had Amazombie behind him latest and is running for an in-form stable in Bob Baffert, he looks one to have on side! The Lumber Guy is respected and capable of a big run having landed a Grade 1 latest. At a bigger price Capital Account could have a chance if the race is run to suit. We know he finishes his races well and 6f suited well latest if Coil and co fail to show. It’s 14/1 bar and we couldn’t recommend anything at a bigger price for a squeak.

Breeders’ Cup Mile (11.40)

It’s the Breeders Cup Mile, the featured race of the two-day meeting at Santa Anita Park. Excelebration and Wise Dan do battle and it looks to be an absolute classic. Excelebration has been all the rage since landing the QEII at Ascot so easily latest and is respected. We have had, and still have, our reservations regarding the four-year-old. This significantly quicker going is likely to catch him out given his best form is all on ground with juice in it. The tight-turning track is likely to suit Wise Dan down to a tee, and there is no doubt he’ll have first run on Excelebration. Joseph O’Brien isn’t the best in a tactical affair, contrasted with Velazquez, who is a definite plus. Wise Dan is the best miler in America and is out to prove his worth this evening against the European invaders, or invader as it were. Moonlight Cloud is capable of running a big race and isn’t one to rule out lightly.

Breeders’ Cup Classic (12.35)

Game On Dude oozes class and will take a world of beating. He had 25/1 shot Nonios and 22/1 Richards Kid a long way behind him in the Awesome Again Stakes and deserves his place at the top of the market. Flat Out looks progressive, trained by William Mott, and is expected to go well under Joel Rosario. But it is hard to see a solid enough challenger to Game On Dude, who should cap off a profitable evening of Breeders Cup action for GYTO!

BREEDERS CUP ACTION FROM SANTA ANITA THIS FLUTTER FRIDAY

The Breeders Cup meetings kick off at the glorious venue, Santa Anita, this evening. The Europeans have some strong claims in The Fugue and Nahrain but the ground is likely to be quicker than they are accustomed to. As expected given the glorious Californian weather, Santa Anita officials on Thursday described the ground on the turf course as firm and the main, dirt track as fast. Godolphin trainer, Mahmood Al Zarooni, aired his concerns expressing how he is hoping they water the track before the first race this evening. There are some fascinating match-ups this evening and its a night worth putting your feet up and enjoying some top quality, american action, live on At The Races. Sky Lantern is expected to go well in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for Richard Hannon, as Hughsie attempts to break his duck. We also hold some faith in Nahrain, who is well-regarded by Roger Varian, and should go well under Frankie Dettori. All our thoughts in detail are below so enjoy the bumper  flutter Friday!

Breeders Cup 2012 – Friday - Santa Anita (USA)

The Breeders Cup 2012 is upon us and all the talk is about Europe v America. We have some great chances going over to USA. The main talk is about Lasix, which is a a diuretic that stops horses bleeding through the nose. It definitely improves performance and the move from the organisers to ban it is juvenile races is a big positive but it will be interesting to see how the home juveniles run without it.

8.06 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint

The big sprint on the card looks a great contest. The one that stands out is Merit Man who blew away the re-opposing South Floyd by 5 1/2 lengths last time when eased down. IF repeating this form we can’t see him getting beaten. This race will be the 1st to be run without the lasix so it will be the 1st pointer to see how the form stands up without it. Super Ninety Nine is rated highly but we think the drop to 6f might suit. Ceiling Kitty is very fast and could exploit these if the lasix has a big effect on the form. Main danger could be hazardous who won a lesser race last time over course and distance.

Bets -

Merit Man 4 point win 7/4 NAP 2nd -4pts

Hazardous 1 point EW 14/1 4th -2pts

8.48 Breeders’ Cup Marathon

The high class Fame and Glory back at his ideal trip hasn’t quite been at his best this year but Aidan O’Brien has said he is fitter than running a big race last time at Ascot until fading in the extra 2 furlongs. If transferring that form to the dirt at Santa Anita he will be very hard to beat. The others are hard to judge as none have shown the stamina for this marathon trip. Sense of purpose, Not Abroad and Worth Repeating will all run a good race but its Calidoscope who could see out the trip quite well and could be a good each-way price.

Bets -

Fame and Glory 2 point win 6/1 PU -2pts

Colidoscope 1 point EW 20/1 Won +25pts

9.28 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Europe have a great chance in this race with Sky Lantern and has the best form on offer. We have a couple of doubts which puts us off it at a short price. Up an extra furlong may not be ideal as she seems very speedy and the fact Hannon has an awful record in the race. The unbeaten Spring Venture could be a good alternative at a better price. She has won a Grade 2 and 3 quite easily and should be good enough to run a big race here. The other European runners in the race are likely to struggle to defy their draws Waterway Run (10) and The Gold Cheongsam (12). Flotilla is good enough to be in the mix but may struggle to beat the selection and Sky Lantern. Kitten’s Point could be interesting if the lack of lasix is having  a big effect on form as she is the only US runner never to have used it.

Bets -

Spring Venture 2 point win 11/2 13th -2pts
(Reverse forecast with Sky Lantern could prove profitable)

10.08 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

This is a race not one to get heavily involved in as they all seem progressive and not much between them. The race could set up perfectly for Executiveprivledge with the pace on offer. However we won’t be on it at 7/4. The two Todd Pletcher unabated runners both have a chance and should be fighting out at the business end. We think the 11/1 (changed from 12s when writing) available on Spring In The Air could be a good prince if taking to the dirt. Won well enough last time on All Weather and we thin she has a good chance.

Bets -

Spring In The Air 1 point EW 11/1 5th -2pts

10.48 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

This race is a very competitive one and we think The Fugue not seen since August has a chance to show he class. She will like the faster ground and 1m2f is defiantly her preferred trip. John Godsen who started his career at this track has administered the much talked about lasix which we see as a positive. Nahrain seems to be hitting form at the right time and is lightly raced this year. We think these two can fight out the finish. Ridasiyna who won the Prix de l´Opera on heavy ground at the Arc meeting is a class horse but may struggle in the fast conditions. Marketing mix is the other horse we expect to be in the places.

The Fugue 4 point win 9/4 NB 3rd -4pts
(Reverse forecast with Nahrain could prove profitable)

11.30 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic

This is a great renewal of the Ladies Classic and it features last years winner Royal Delta who seems better than ever. She had a knock when travelling but trainer says she is fine and we think she will take a lot of beating. Questing wasn’t run with the right tactics last time and could show a lot better this time out. She also gets an age allowance which should help he follow the selection home. Awesome Feather and Miss Aurelia are also expected to go well and fight it out for a place.

Royal Delta 4 point win 3/1 Won +12pts
(Reverse forecast with Questing could prove profitable)

KING KAUTO RETIRED

Five-time King George champ Kauto Star was retired yesterday by trainer-Paul Nicholls. Paul described it as “The end of an era” and Clive Smith explained how it was no ‘easy’ decision. Nicholls described on his Betfair column yesterday how after a superb nine-years with the horse, his work the past few weeks gave all the signs that retirement was the right option to take. Both trainer and owner felt he had “done enough”. Kauto Star is signing off in full health and after a season in which he proved so many people wrong, includng us, by winning a fifth King George and a fourth Betfair Chase, to add to his two Cheltenham Gold Cups and Tingle Creeks. The horse has consistently proved himself a class apart, since winning on debut for Paul Nicholls back in December, 2004. He has come a long way since then, winning the £1m Betfair Million Bonus in 2007 and 16 Grade 1′s later, he has definitely earned his retirement. We will always remember Kauto Star, and are proud to say we witnessed his final victory in the King George, in December 2011. The cheer of the crowd as he crossed the line victorious that day will live long in our memories, as will Kauto in many of yours.

DUNDONNELL AND SKY LANTERN SUPPORTED AFTER FAVOURABLE DRAWS

Both Dundonnell and Sky Lantern received favourable draws for their Breeders Cup exerts. In fact, the draw was largely kind to the majority of European raiders with the leading fancy, Excelebration receiving stall six of nine in Saturday’s Mile. Sky Lantern looks the best-backed horse, into clear 5/2 favourite having been drawn in stall three – a ‘plum’ draw, for Friday’s Juvenile Fillies Turf. St Nicholas Abbey received stall three with Shareta next door in four and Treasure Beach in five for Saturday’s Turf. The Fugue, now clear favourite, was drawn four off the rail.
