Thursday 31st May Selections

This years largely Camelot-orientated Derby market represents little value on first appearance with the O’Brien favourite now odds on with bookmakers retreating, now offering w/o favourite markets. But we are happy to give MAIN SEQUENCE a valued shot on Saturday, at 10/1 the unbeaten colt could thrive in the conditions at Epsom on Saturday. He coped with a step up in trip to a mile and a half and switching from handicap company to Group class when landing his Lingfield Derby Trial nineteen days ago. He travelled well throughout the race, settled initially in rear before making smooth headway through the field to take up the running and hold off Shantaram in impressive style. Camelot has undoubtedly impressed, especially with his commanding win at Newmarket handling the dip in the track well weaving in between horses to get his neck in front. But we feel Joseph O’Brien and his hold up tactics may well lose him the race with Epsom likely to prove a totally different ball game. The way MAIN SEQUENCE quickened away in his Lingfield trial over the same trip as that of the derby is reassuring and with the chief protagonists Bonfire and favourite Camelot yet to go over 1m4f we are happy to give Lanigan’s colt a chance at the projected prices. Good morning punters…!

It was an enjoyable day at the races yesterday as we conjured up twelve winners in total, landing an 8/1 daily double in the process. The lucky 15 was again slightly disappointing with just two out of the four winners. The highlight of the day was GLITTERING GOLD completing the daily double for Sir Michael Stoute under Ryan Moore at Folkestone. The 3-yo always travelled well under a confident ride stalking the leaders and was sent for home just over 1f before being driven out to hold on well from Richard Hannon’s Rule Book. Despite this pleasing run it’s probably not a 3-yo for the notebook and just the one winner out of the twelve stuck out in our minds. That eye-catcher was ELSIE in the last race of the day in Ireland at Punchestown. This Thomas Mullins trained 5-yo travelled smoothly throughout and quickened away well and definitely looks like winning next time out.

Wednesdays Winners: Party Royal 9/4 (NAP), Glittering Gold 15/8 (NAP), Raptor 6/4 (NAP), Whatshallwedo 4/6 (NAP), Sunny Side Up 9/2 (NB), Marodima 7/2 (NB), Passage Vendome 2/1 (NB), Harare 8/1, Solars Exhibition 11/2, Escape To Glory 3/1, Ballyvoneen 11/4, Elsie 5/4

It was really pleasing to maintain our winning form this week with Epsom and the Derby just round the corner, but before that there is some exciting, competitive action from Sandown to get stuck into. As well as meetings from Ayr and Brighton. One to watch at Sandown this evening is BAILEY’S JUBILEE out of the Johnston yard having been withdrawn from Beverley yesterday to race in listed company this evening. The promising 2-yo won her first two starts convincingly before disappointing in Listed company at York just under two weeks ago. She does bump into another impressive type out of the Hannon yard in Sir Prancealot, who was a ready winner at Bath but at the projected prices looks a colt to take on. Especially with Mark Johnston withdrawing her late on yesterday. Effie B from the Channon yard is also not one to totally discount.
