FRANKIE WITH A COLOURFUL DISPLAY
It was another tough day for punters yesterday at Royal Ascot, but for the third day in a row we managed to finish in profit. It was our third winning NAP of Royal Ascot and by far the best one to date with COLOUR VISION taking a huge drift out to 7/1 before the off. Frankie Dettori, once again proved his critics wrong as he gave the unexposed 4-yo a power-packed ride to lift the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. It was a Godolphin fight to the death as Opinion Poll – a horse Frankie had deserted, explaining how he cannot beat Fame And Glory – also ran the race of it’s life under young Barzalona but Dettori had the hunger and drove him out to score. There was a stewards at the end of the race as the two horses briefly collided in the final few yards but the winner was never in doubt. Frankie took up a perfect position in the early stages of the race on the heels of the leaders and the early pace was no more than a doodle but when asked to quicken COLOUR VISION did so impressively and the progressive stayer was too much for the classy field to handle. Fame And Glory was well-beaten, failing to pick up under pressure and it was Godolphin and Dettori who prevailed. Good morning punters!
It was an emotional day for fans of COLOUR VISION yesterday and Dettori alike as he landed the Royal Ascot Gold Cup in tremendous fashion. It was the highlight of the week so far for us as the unexposed 4-yo outstayed a classy field to land the odds at 7/1 fending off the brave Opinion Poll and the young and upcoming Mickael Barzalona.
Gold Cup success aside it was another tough day with the ever-changing weather and ground combined with the mammoth fields making life difficult for punters and tipsters alike. Reckless Abandon took the opener for Clive Cox, Adam Kirby on board the 2-yo is likely to receive a hefty-ban for his performance in over-excessive use of the whip. He has been found guilty several times in six months and its unlikely the BHA will prove lenient. CAY VERDE never really threatened and was found off the pace up the centre of the track. But even so he finished mid-pack and didn’t show much to suggest if he had been with the pace up the rail he could have won. It was a disappointing start with Mick Channon’s 2-yo seemingly representing the strongest form. One to take out of the opener was Gale Force Ten who is bred for a lot further than a sharp 5f and ran really well to finish a staying-on second for Aidan O’Brien.
It was an Irish trained winner in the Ribblesdale Stakes as PRINCESS HIGHWAY did the business under Pat Smullen as that terrible record for those who ran in the Oaks continues with The Fugue seemingly well beaten in second, with Shirocco Star third and the disappointing VOW sixth. A horse close to our hearts but was desperately disappointing yesterday and it’s unlikely we will be able to give her another chance. She had every chance again and was quickly outpaced and well held wandering a furlong out and fading rapidly to fall back through the pack.
Fast Or Free a horse that was crossed off the GYTO shortlist came up top trumps for William Haggas and Ryan Moore performing a class above the field powering away to land the Britannia Stakes Heritage Handicap. We decided to cross it off when we saw it was favourite in a twenty-nine run race. Our eventual choice TRADER JACK was held up by James Doyle – a decision he must regret. In ground like it was with the amount of runners it was surely better to get closer to the pace. When asked it was all to late and Roger Charlton’s 3-yo made no impression and weakened late on. The Roger Charlton stable is one we will be avoiding in the near future as we have struggled to land a tip since Bated Breath winning at Haydock.
It was a German bred, owned and trained winner in the Tercentenary Stakes as ENERGIZER thrived off the conditions and the cut in the ground. The trainer said after the race “a moonsoon wouldn’t have been a problem”. Stipulate ran a cracker for Sir Henry Cecil but couldn’t go with the leader. GRANDEUR was supported late on into joint favourite but finished a disappointing seventh and the ground didn’t look to be in his favour as he couldn’t pick up in the dying strides.
There is another six races to get stuck into today, with the featured race of the day the Coronation Stakes where 1,000 Guineas sensation HOMECOMING QUEEN sets out to prove her demolition on soft-ground was no fluke and her main threat might come from Laugh Out Loud who has progressed well for Mick Channon of late landing a Group 2 race in Chantilly latest. ASTROLOGY is in action in the King Edward VII Stakes for the O’Brien’s and is likely to be a tough nut to crack. GATEWOOD is in action in the Wolferton Handicap having been an impressive last-to-first winner at Epsom recently. GLOBAL VILLAGE also takes to the field for another huge handicap in the Buckingham Palace Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT DAY FOUR IN-DEPTH
2.30 Albany Stakes, Grp 3 6f
Nineteen go to post for the opener on Day Four Of a so-far captivating Royal Ascot. With several open to significant progression, they will still have to go some to match Gosden’s impressive NEWFANGLED who looked a really smart prospect when winning at Newmarket on debut. The daughter of New Approach demolished her field in emphatic style at Newmarket and it is no surprise to see her top the betting in what otherwise is normally a pretty open race. Sandreamer looks the likeliest danger having to come from an unpromising position to score on her Newmarket debut, so does merit respect. That debut win has been franked with Sharaarah who finished second went on to win her next race and finish just eight-lengths of CEILING KITTY in a tough race her on Wednesday. Another to note, and who completes the shortlist is The Gold Cheongsam for a trainer who has a fine record in this race and she shaped nicely on her debut and has potential to improve and go very well.
3.05 King Edward VII Stakes, Grp 2 1m4f
With two non-runners in Farhaan and Shantaram (our initial choice) just give go to post now in what still looks a competitive renewal. Frankel’s brother Noble Mission goes to post in fairly good shape and should stay the mile and half, and is proven on soft ground with his performance at Newmarket seeing off Mariner’s Cross – a result that cost us a lot of money that day! The clear form pick is Aidan O’Brien’s ASTROLOGY who put up a good third in the Derby just three weeks ago and should go well on the ground. Thought Worthy likely to be saddled by Buick now should pose some sort of a threat but will have to improve from his 11-length fourth in the Derby.
3.45 Coronation Stakes, Grp 1 1m
Ten runners go to post for this years Coronation Stakes with Elusive Kate and more significantly Maybe being declared as non-runners. It still looks a fairly open race, but its hard to get away from HOMECOMING QUEEN after her 1,000 Guineas demolishing job on soft ground. Laugh Out Loud comes off the back of a good win in France at Chantilly and warrants some respect but the biggest threat may come from Samitar who had her Irish Guineas win boosted in the Jersey Stakes. But may prefer better ground and with the official going Soft today its tough to get away from the favourite who should confirm 1,000 Guineas form.
4.25 Wolferton Handicap, Listed Handicap 1m2f
This is one of the races of the day for us as the impressive last-to-first GATEWOOD is back in action today under Buick. He arrives on the back of just five career starts and remains an exciting prospect for the Gosden team. He had a lot of trouble in running in a competitive Epsom handicap and has to be better than the bare form suggests. Already this morning he has been backed into 3/1 from 7/2 and will probably go off a lot shorter. He matches all the trends regarding this race and is the only horse in the field to do so. He has a single figure draw, has been placed in last start – winning at Epsom, and has had two or less runs this season. Mijhaar could give him most to think about, seemingly on an appealing mark for Roger Varian and has also been subject to support this morning.
5.00 Queen’s Vase, Grp 3 2m
A tough race to figure out with twelve going to post, ten who you could make winning cases for. With so few of them going anywhere near 2m it’s hard to be confident on any in particular and so we have decided to seek a bit of value and a tentative vote goes to MINIMIZE RISK who ran creditably in the derby and is a half-brother to a Goodwood Cup winner. He has been on the drift this morning though and the jury is out on whether he’ll stay. However, again referring to the trends – he is the only horse who matches the stats. He was un-raced as a 2-yo, is in the top four of the betting and contested a group race last time (derby). He had a tough race in the derby and should find this a lot easier. Athens is an obvious threat for Ballydoyle with the yard having won this twice in the past five years. Gives the action that he is a relentless galloper despite only having travelled up to eleven furlongs. However, the main danger to our selection looks to be ESTIMATE who could deliver a Royal success in Diamond Jubilee year. She powered away in a maiden at Salisbury last month and looked a promising stayer in the making. It is a big step up in grade but with so many questions over so many of these in an open race she may well be worth the risk.
5.35 Buckingham Palace Stakes, Class 2 Handicap 7f
A tough little handicap to end proceedings where GLOBAL VILLAGE immediately catches the eye with conditions forecasted for Soft. We of course tipped him up in the Betfred Victoria Cup where he powered to victory in identical conditions at a big price. He has been halved in price today and the value may well have passed. Others that catch the eye in a wide open renewal is Primaeval who seems to be improving as a 6-yo and is still lightly raced for a gelding of his age. Looks to be the perfect trip and can give Hayley Turner her first victory of the week. There are however, fears over the predicted going with quicker ground in his favour. I am convinced Eton Forever will put in a better performance today after everything going wrong at Chester and he has to remain of some interest. The EW shot at a price looks to be GOSSAMER SEED who has the going in his favour and has been in fair form of late and has the added bonus of Joseph O’Brien in the saddle today.
