Thursday 2nd August Selections

It was a memorable day for British sport as we finally hit Gold in the 2012 Olympics, in the women’s rowing and men’s cycling. As a racing fan, Frankel somehow managed to upstage this breakthrough cruising to success for the twelfth time eased down under a confident Tom Queally.

Of course, it was expected to be a procession with the superstar priced up a 1-20 shot prior to the race. Many bookmakers were offering distance markets with the best price available 9-4 on between 5-7 lengths. Its always a risky market to get stuck into with horses as good as Frankel always likely to be eased down in the closing stages. By the sounds of twitter though, many of you got stuck into the 8+ length market, best priced 6/4. And there was no shame in doing so after his breathtaking 11-length romp at Royal Ascot. Unfortunately the official distance was 6-lengths with Queally inevitably easing him down.

Frankel‘s next stop is already pencilled in the diary at York in the Juddmonte International Stakes over 1m2f. It will be the first time we see him at this extended trip but the way he has remained on the bridle the last two runs so impressively there is no doubt he’ll see it out. His full brother Noble Mission stayed exceedingly well over 1m4f on Monday to land Group Two success, and it is likely to suit based on breeding.

Racing manager Khaled Abdullah has not ruled out an opportunity to see Frankel at the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp on September 16. Although, the focus is on York at this stage and its all based on how he comes out of the race. Grimthorpe said: ‘The Prix du Moulin would be a possible stepping stone. What we really want to do is get through York. There is no great plan beyond but we have to think about what we might do in that two- month gap.’

Frankel was again breathtaking in victory today, landing his twelfth career win at Group One level. It was a visually deceptive penultimate furlong as he remained on the bit powering to victory averaging 43.19mph leaving the field for dead. The Sussex Stakes is considered one of the most prestigious races in the calendar and it was used merely as a stepping stone for Frankel‘s next race.

Defiant Hughsey – Despite struggling to handle the track and checking his stride, Olympic Glory sauntered to late success under a determine Richard Hughes who never gave up.
