MOONLIGHT SHINES IN PRIX MAURICE DE GHEEST
Moonlight Cloud delivered the most impressive performance of the day over at Deauville in France winning the Group One, Prix Maurice de Gheest by five-lengths. You may remember her as the filly who pushed Black Caviar all the way in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. She followed up last year’s success in scintillating style under Thierry Jarnet cruising up to challenge and sprint clear to score impressively for trainer Freddy Head. Eve Johnson Houghton, trainer of The Cheka will be pleased with his progress of late finishing second to the impressive Mayson at Newmarket before a creditable third in the Prix Maurice de Gheest. He did officially finish fourth past the post but placings were reversed with American Devil after it was deemed that there was some interference inside the final furlong. Wizz Kid finished well to grab second but in truth there were no feasible challengers as Moonlight Cloud romped to victory laughing at the field. Good morning punters!
a look back at the weekend
It was some weekend with Glorious Goodwood coming to its conclusion, albeit the weather not so ‘Glorious’. The Galway Festival also came to an end after seven-days of competitive action. The big race of the day on Saturday, the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes, went to The Fugue who finally proved her worth and confirmed the promise she had shown for trainer John Gosden. William Buick, the stables leading jockey, who has experienced so much success under Gosden this season chose Izzi Top. It was a decision that probably made itself with her the proven Group One victor out of the two, having landed the Pretty Polly Stakes so impressively. Ultimately, it’s what swayed our decision even though we recognised The Fugue hadn’t had all the breaks she could of in previous starts. We have of course, opposed her throughout her career with the disappointing likes of Vow in the Oaks and again in the Ribblesdale. We wasn’t prepared to go against Buick’s thoughts and Izzi Top‘s form. The Fugue obviously represented the value in the race at 4/1 and Richard Hughes – a course specialist at Goodwood, probably made up several of your minds.
THE FUGUE CONFIRMS EARLY PROMISE IN NASSAU STAKES
Richard Hughes rode his way to success on board The Fugue in the Nassau Stakes on Saturday. He won his third straight Racing UK Glorious Goodwood Top Jockey Award with four winners throughout the week. In 2010 he broke records recording nine winners, and again was victorious last year riding five. His victory onboard The Fugue was so significant as Tom Queally had also matched his impressive four winners but Richard Hughes had rode more seconds. Queally must have been gutted as he tried to rally late on Timepiece but he didn’t have enough horse under him to match The Fugue‘s giant strides in the dying yards. Good afternoon punters,
After a rocky week last week we are looking to bounce back to form today. It was a better weekend creating a profit on both Saturday and Sunday. Racing looks pretty tough today in fairness, and with the weather fluctuating its probably worth keeping your stakes fairly low for the time being. Good luck if you are having a flutter with us today. It’s a busy Monday with six meetings to get stuck into!
